Shepard Butler is a registered Landscape Architect with over 10 years of experience. He and his wife Lindsay, founded Butler Landscape Architecture (BLA) in 2018.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007, Shep packed his bags and headed to Thetford, Vermont. There, he spent several seasons laboring under the direction of his uncle and namesake, Shepard Butler of Shepard Butler Landscape Associates, where he first recognized his passion for landscape design and cultivated an understanding of the plant world. Shep went on to attend the NC State College of Design as a graduate student in the Department of Landscape Architecture, where his studies focused on the role of design in environmental stewardship, restoration and regeneration in urban, rural and natural settings.

Receiving his master’s degree in landscape architecture in 2011, Shep accepted his first job at a Durham-based landscape architecture firm before moving his family to Long Island, New York after accepting a role at Landscape Details Inc., a residential design-build firm in East Hampton. At Landscape Details, Shep’s designs ranged from poolside gardens to large sprawling landscapes. His elegant aesthetic has equally captivated residents in Wilmington, North Carolina, where Shep and his wife Lindsay now reside and have joined forces as Butler Landscape Architecture (BLA).

When he’s not in the office or on a job site, Shep enjoys spending time with his family, playing bluegrass on his guitar, surfing and traveling out West to snowboard, hike and explore.
